1.First they are killed
2. Next they are conveyed by a shackle conveyor (hanging by their feet) through a bath of hot water. This loosens the feathers from the skin.
3. The feather plucking machines are known as "pickers" The picking machines have hundreds of rubber fingers mounted to rotating drums. The picker fingers rub the feathers off the chickens as they pass through the machines. Usually and at the modern processing speeds the birds must pass through several minutesto complete the job.
4. Finally, water spray washes the feathers out of the machines into an open trench drain where the feathers are then flowed out from the plant.
